Youth FAQs

Q: How much does HQ cost?

A: HQ is free and open for youth age 14-24. We do not and will never charge for youth to access our space or basic needs items.

Q: What do I need to become a member?

A: All you need to do is prove that you’re 14-24 years old. If you don’t have an ID, that’s ok! We can use medical or school records, so just let us know.

Q: I don’t want my parents/guardians/ex to know I’m at HQ. Will you tell them if I’m in the space?

A: No. Unless the police come with a warrant, we do not confirm or deny whether or not anyone is in HQ to protect your safety.

Q: What if I need more time at HQ?

A: If you need more time with staff, staff are available by appointment outside of drop-in hours. Just ask!

Q: Can I sleep at HQ?

A: You can absolutely take a nap at HQ during your drop-in. We are not a shelter, so we do not provide overnight housing, but we can connect you to housing resources if you need them.

Volunteer FAQs

Q: What do I need to do to become an HQ volunteer?

A: Our volunteer process is designed to protect youth and equip volunteers with the skills they need to be trauma-informed resources in our space. For individuals, you’ll need to fill out an online application, and attend our HQ 101 training. Bring your ID to this training, as we do run background checks.

Q: I have a record — can I still volunteer?

A: We recognize that everyone’s journey is different. We meet with potential volunteers with records on a case-by-case basis to find their best fit at HQ.

Q: I have a really specific skill that I’d like to give to HQ. How does that work?

A: We love volunteers with really specific skills! If there’s something you’re passionate about that you’d like to offer to HQ that’s outside of the usual volunteer parameters, let’s talk. We’d love to see how you’d fit at HQ. If you’re a nurse or doctor, learn how you can support health initiatives at HQ.

Q: Can my group or office volunteer at HQ?

A: Yes! We love having groups in our space. All group volunteering, however, must take place outside of drop-in. Groups do not need to go through our volunteer process to get involved at HQ.

Donor FAQs

Q: How much of my donation goes to help youth in need?

A: 100% of your donation goes towards making sure West Michigan youth have the resources they need to thrive. If you want to support a specific initiative at HQ, let us know, and we can share how your gift is making a difference in the lives of HQ youth.

Q: Is HQ a 501(c)3 organization?

A: Yes! You can read our reports here.

Q: Are you religiously affiliated?

A: No. There is also no religious requirement for youth while at HQ.
