Shandra Steininger, LMSW
I exist to help others realize the power they hold in their life and over their future, even in the face of extreme adversity. I know from personal experience the impact one person can have when they truly believe in you and I strive to do that to the greatest extent possible…and to live a life of no regret!
Holly Anderton, MPA
Special Projects Coordinator
I chose to be part of the HQ team because I believe that youth in our community deserve a safe place to be where adults are allies rather than decision makers for youth. HQ is a space that energizes me everyday to see the good in the darker places and to be an advocate for change in this community.
Member Specialist + Kitchen Manager
I enjoy and do what I do at HQ because I was shown by another that at the end of the day I am absolutely cherished and matter as well as am loved. HQ is a wonderful outlet that allows me to bring this to our youth, my co-workers, and anyone who walks through our doors. Basically, I’m just about it, dude!
Samuel Jones, BBA
Education + Employment Manager
I came to HQ because I wanted to be apart of a mission that connects to my passion and purpose for life. Providing access to information, opportunities, and careers is my life’s work, and with HQ, I believe our youth will feel empowered and meet their goals for employment and beyond.

I am inspired to be part of an organization that welcomes anyone regardless of their past or their present, and walks with them to a better future, This is a community that can save lives and change lives. I’ve seen it happen. As a member specialist, I’m here to listen, support, and mentor as we figure out life together.
I believe that when we strive to empower others, our whole community gains from the effort. I was drawn to HQ because it is a safe place where youth can adjust the trajectory of their lives to achieve hopes and goals. We all succeed together, and every HQ member who realizes their potential makes our community stronger and more vibrant for us all.
Demetria Phillips, LLMSW
I believe that safe, affordable housing is a basic human right. Working at HQ allows me to do my part to empower youth to access the housing and community resources needed to increase their independence and stability. I am thrilled to be part of HQ because it is a safe and inclusive space for youth in my community and it will provide me with the opportunity to promote social justice and equality.
Member Specialist + Advocate
The thing that attracts me most to HQ is the commitment to inclusion and empowerment. We don’t stray from difficult conversations, whether it be among staff, with members, or dialogue within the community. HQ gives a voice to some of the most vulnerable and marginalized people in our community, and does it’s best to meet youth where they’re at. HQ is a place where you are deeply celebrated exactly as you are, and I can dig that.
Member Specialist + Volunteer Support
I am with HQ because I connect deeply with the faces that take up this space, I am familiar with these faces as they reflect my own personal realities. At HQ I have a voice to reaffirm that all humans are inherently worthy of dignity, love, and respect. I believe that each person is truly unique, inspiring and flowing with potential. HQ proves to be an empowering place in this push for social justice and ultimately to end youth homelessness. It’s dope.

As an activism-minded person, I believe social justice and social change should begin with the empowerment of the most marginalized. HQ is committed to engaging youth experiencing homelessness in a way that constantly emphasizes their power and agency over their own lives and bodies. When we affirm and empower our youth in this manner, they enact the change they want to see in the world; I’m extremely excited and glad to be a part of that process through my work at HQ.
I am deeply passionate about empowering people to realize and reach their full potential. I believe in people, even those others have given up on. I am attracted to HQ because I am able to work with young people who have the whole world before them. I love being able to help youth reach for what they need to succeed. I think it is important that HQ continues to educate people about the potential of the youth in Grand Rapids and works to show how we can all work together to end youth homelessness.
I decided to intern with HQ because I wholeheartedly support their mission of inclusion. HQ supports those who are some of the most marginalized in our society, and it gives a sense of welcome each time you walk through the doors. I am looking forward to learning about everything HQ has to offer, and I cannot wait to engage with the youth whether it’s having a conversation, assisting them with their goals, or even just sharing a meal. It is a great feeling to be involved with an organization that promotes social justice and empowers its members.
